As part of the anime and manga research circle, I received an email recently from a fellow anime/manga academic linking to his annual list of anime/manga scholarship published in 2010. Looking through it, there are a few titles and chapters that sparked my interest, especially concerning the cyborg and, in particular, the book ‘Tokyo Cyberpunk: Posthumanism in Japanese Visual Culture’ by Steven Brown. I will endeavour to track this last one down, hopefully it will be relevant to my current research into cyberpunk and the cyborg (introduction available here). Also, quite a bit has been published on yaoi manga and one that may be of interest to the lolicons out there is an article titled ‘Kawaii vs. rorikon: The reinvention of the term Lolita in modern Japanese manga’ by Zank Dinah. There is also, what I assume from the titles, specific studies of Satoshi Kon, Cowboy Bebop, Lupin III, Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke. There are 158 entries in the list and the editor has stated that it is not a complete list, but a comprehensive list – ‘a work in progress’ – drawing from a lot of different disciplines. As it is, I feel it is a very helpful tool in navigating through the current scholarship, and I highly recommend anybody interested in anime/manga academia to check it out. You can find it here.
